"Dignity and justice for all of us,” on the occasion of the International Human rights day 10 December 2008 “It is our duty to ensure that these rights are a living reality, that they are known, understood and enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. It is often those who most need their human rights protected, who also need to be informed that the Declaration exists and that it exists for them”. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (2007) ROHR Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Human Rights Day. It is the day when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted in Paris on the 10th of December in 1948. We salute those who struggle to defend, protect and promote the fundamental freedoms that are the birthright of all mankind, regardless of race, sex, religion, political affiliation and ethnicity. Today, as we honour and commemorate that historic document, the values it enshrines and our ongoing effort to restore a culture of human rights, Zimbabwe is sinking deeper in chaos and experiencing increased human rights violations. In fact, the State has become a serial human rights violator.

ZIMBABWE A CANISTER OF HUMAN RIGHTS WORMS!!! A PEOPLE IN PAIN!!!
Zimbabwe is a nation in transition, or should we say in confusion. It is a nation in transition simply because a process that leads to an inevitable change of government is currently underway. Zimbabweans have never tasted new leadership since 1980 simply because the Zanu PF government, which is a slow learner of the principles of democracy and peace, clung to power at all cost even if it means burning homes, beating and killing people. It is historic and also unprecedented. It is the first time ever that, Zanu PF and the opposition MDC, agreed to work together in a Government of mutual cooperation, for the purposes of proffering solutions for the beleaguered nation. A month is gone since the three leaders of the political parties entered into a “Deal” to form a Government of National Unity, and the talks are still limping on.

ROHR ZIMBABWE PRESS STATEMENT ON WORLD AIDS DAY
Monday, 01 December 2008 00:00
Information Department Zimbabwe
ROHR Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in observing World Aids Day. This is the day when individuals and organisations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic that has claimed millions of lives across the world. According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2007 some 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.
ROHR Zimbabwe salutes all men, women and children who are living with HIV/Aids everyday; who manage to fight the stigma associated with it; who persevere even in the face of hardships, poverty, non-availability of cash from the bank and crumbled health sector in Zimbabwe.

Cholera Deaths - State negligence and indifference

ROHR Zimbabwe notes with apprehension the catastrophic progression of the cholera outbreak that is threatening to annihilate the lives of Zimbabwean citizens. ROHR Zimbabwe has been monitoring the anguish and threat posed by the closure or non functionality of state hospitals and clinic as a result of a protracted strike by nurses since the month of August and the recent strike of specialist doctors on 16 October which critically paralysed the health sector. Some of the biggest hospitals Parirenyatwa Group of hospitals, Harare Central hospital, and Mpilo General hospital have ever since been discharging and turning away critically ill patients and advising them to visit private hospitals. Meanwhile Zimbabwe has been hit by a runaway cholera epidemic which, according to medical authorites, has claimed more than 100 people in the past two months. Doctors believe that many more cases of the disease, which causes acute diarrhoea and vomiting, and can lead to death from dehydration within 24 hours, have gone unreported. The State newspaper (The Herald) today (6 Nov 2008) claims Cholera has claimed nine people so far in Budiriro, The Standard (2 Nov 2008) reports that the casualties are well over twenty in Budiriro suburb since last week. The Standard reports that close to 100 people have died of Cholera in less than two months in Harare, Chitungwiza, Kariba and Chinyoyi.
