ROHR Press Release – 17 February 2009

Restoration of Human Rights Zimbabwe will hold a peaceful demonstration in Harare on 18 February 2009 protesting against the continued detention of prisoners of conscience at Chikurubi Maximum prison and other places of detention.

32 human rights activists and Movement for Democratic Change supporters continue to be incarcerated since 2008 and only 22 of the 32 have been brought before the courts.

The inclusive Government is failing to ensure the release of Jestina Mukoko, Director of Zimbabwe Peace Project, Frank Muchirahondo and Daniel Mlenga both USAID employees and many other prisoners of conscience. This is despite assurances by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai that the political detainees will be released hastily. On the contrary arrests are increasing as six WOZA activists are detained for holding a peaceful demonstration. On Friday 13 February the deputy Minister of Agriculture Roy Bennett was arrested on treason charged which were later dropped and exchanged for attempted insurgency, terrorism and banditry.

As ROHR Zimbabwe we strongly castigate the deliberate attempt to hold human rights and political activists captive for as long as the Government pleases through unnecessary legal technicalities, considering that their abduction was unlawful in the first place. It is an abuse of these citizen’s rights to freedom and a right to a comfortable life.

The demonstration will be held to put pressure on the inclusive government to release the detainees. We believe it is against the spirit of the Global Political Agreement signed in September 2008 that has given birth to a Unity Government. ROHR Zimbabwe will also join other civic organisations in a combined solidarity action planned for tomorrow at the Rotten Row Courts 9am.

Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe (ROHR) – Highlights 2008
ROHR was founded in 2007 out of the Vigil’s need for a presence on the ground in Zimbabwe to create a democratic space where people can act without fear. Here is a summary of their activities in Zimbabwe for 2008. We also report on ROHR activities in the UK and South Africa last year.

Dignity and justice for all of us

"Dignity and justice for all of us,” on the occasion of the International Human rights day 10 December 2008
“It is our duty to ensure that these rights are a living reality, that they are known, understood and enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. It is often those who most need their human rights protected, who also need to be informed that the Declaration exists and that it exists for them”.
                                                                                         UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (2007)
ROHR Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Human Rights Day. It is the day when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted in Paris on the 10th of December in 1948. We salute those who struggle to defend, protect and promote the fundamental freedoms that are the birthright of all mankind, regardless of race, sex, religion, political affiliation and ethnicity. Today, as we honour and commemorate that historic document, the values it enshrines and our ongoing effort to restore a culture of human rights, Zimbabwe is sinking deeper in chaos and experiencing increased human rights violations. In fact, the State has become a serial human rights violator.

ZIMBABWE A CANISTER OF HUMAN RIGHTS WORMS!!!

ZIMBABWE A CANISTER OF HUMAN RIGHTS WORMS!!!
A PEOPLE IN PAIN!!!

Zimbabwe is a nation in transition, or should we say in confusion. It is a nation in transition simply because a process that leads to an inevitable change of government is currently underway.  Zimbabweans have never tasted new leadership since 1980 simply because the Zanu PF government, which is a slow learner of the principles of democracy and peace, clung to power at all cost even if it means burning homes, beating and killing people.
It is historic and also unprecedented. It is the first time ever that, Zanu PF and the opposition MDC, agreed to work together in a Government of mutual cooperation, for the purposes of proffering solutions for the beleaguered nation. A month is gone since the three leaders of the political parties entered into a “Deal” to form a Government of National Unity, and the talks are still limping on.

ROHR ZIMBABWE PRESS STATEMENT ON WORLD AIDS DAY

E-mail PDF
ROHR Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in observing World Aids Day. This is the day when individuals and organisations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic that has claimed millions of lives across the world. According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2007 some 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.
ROHR Zimbabwe salutes all men, women and children who are living with HIV/Aids everyday; who manage to fight the stigma associated with it; who persevere even in the face of hardships, poverty, non-availability of cash from the bank and crumbled health sector in Zimbabwe.
