Restoration of Human Rights Zimbabwe (ROHR) is appealing for well wishers in capacity as individuals, organizations and to the government for financial assistance for Wonder Mabhoko (12) from Chibuwe village, he needs immediate medical attention. He needs to undergo an operation on his spine after he was struck by a metal object by another school child in 2008 and since then he has been having a wound that has kept him immobile and shattered his life.

Wonder is unable to go to school or do anything with his life, his family is badly ridden in poverty and they can not afford medical bills required for his health to be restored. To undergo an operation Wonder requires a minimum of US 10 000. Wonder lives with his mother and other seven children; the father who was the breadwinner has since passed away.

ROHR Zimbabwe came across Wonder’s situation during a visit to Chibuwe to commemorate the peace day. As human rights defenders we are appealing to the nation to protect the right to life by donating towards the cause of restoring health on the case beforehand. It is our belief that everyone has a right to medication and good health regardless of social status or income.

Those willing to donate towards Wonder’s medical bill can contact ROHR Zimbabwe on the following numbers +263772713410, +263773011599 or +263774444134 or email us on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Debate on the abolition of the death sentence in Zimbabwe

E-mail PDF

From ROHR Zimbabwe Information Department

Amnesty International in conjunction with Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum held a two day workshop from Monday the 24th to 25th of January to stir debate on exploring and developing concrete strategies for campaigning against the death penalty in Zimbabwe. The meeting was attended by Ms Dupe Atoki a Commissioner with the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR), traditional leaders, the two legal secretaries from the two MDC factions Minister Gonese, Minister Coltart to give their party submissions with minister Mnangangwa from ZANU PF failing to turn up. Forming part of the participants were lawyers, human rights defenders and members from various civil society organizations, among them NANGO, ZLHR, ROHR Zimbabwe and ZimRights.

Resounding consensus emerged among the participants that the death penalty should be abolished to uphold the unqualified right to life as guaranteed by regional instruments which include article 4 of the ACHPR, article 5 on the Rights and Welfare of the Child 1990, article 5 of the Arab Charter on Human Rights 1994 and international instruments among them article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948. Mr Maja a lawyer and Lecture with the University of Zimbabwe pin pointed that it was pertinent for the courts to infuse human rights on their interpretation of the law to make sure that the law should not impede on the right to life. In his presentation, Mr Maja also highlighted that there were 52 inmates in Zimbabwe’s Prisons that are currently waiting on the death row with others having spent more than a decade without knowing their fate. He further bemoaned the squalid inhuman conditions that amount to undermining of human dignity, prevalent in the prison cells for the inmates on death row. Executions were last carried out in 2004.

Participants unanimously agreed to come up with strategies and tools to influence key stakeholders to support the call for the abolition of the death penalty in the new constitution and other platforms like applications to the Supreme Court.

It was noted that there is a huge need to conduct civic education on the critical mass to conscentise them on the debate and equally important to present them with other available options available to the death penalty without necessarily advocating to take life as a form of sentence.

Traditional leaders denounced death penalty as a western idea brought about by the settler colonialist regime and submitted that it was un-African to kill as that the African culture places sacred importance to the right to life.

Political activist assaulted and left for dead by state agents in attempted abduction

E-mail PDF

From ROHR Zimbabwe Information Department

ROHR Zimbabwe has received a shocking report of an act of political violence from an MDC political activist who was brutally assaulted by state security agents in a failed abduction plot.

Julius Mutavira Gono (43) of ward 10, Chiredzi South constituency was heavily beaten in broad daylight, left battling for his life while his family and neighbors watched helplessly, a day before Christmas day. He was assaulted by three armed state security agents who drove at his house in Madzimure village, with a Nissan twin cab with unmarked plates. The incident is now in the hands of Chikombedzi police peace section case reference number 30/01/11 and the notorious CIO agents have been identified as Matambanadzo, Tinago and Magara all from Chikombedzi police station Chiredzi South constituency.

A medical report carried out confirms that Mutavira sustained internal back and leg injuries, a swollen red eye and he is still in need of further medical attention.

Mutavira told ROHR Zimbabwe that he was being targeted because of his political involvement with the MDC party. Matambanadzo told Mutavira that he was punishing him for the complaints he is receiving against Mutavira’s involvement in MDC affairs. Julius said he now fears for his life after Matambanadzo further threatened him that he will not live to see the next election.

The incident took place took weeks after the visit of war veteran Jabulani Sibanda to Chiredzi South, who is alleged to be on a country wide campaign to fan criminal activities of political violence against members of the MDC party.

Despite the fact that the case has been reported to the police, nothing has been done to see that justice takes its course on the perpetrators who are still roaming free.

ROHR Zimbabwe is raising serious concerns to the coalition government on the issue of prioritization of the security of ordinary people ahead of the envisaged elections against the backdrop of organized criminal activities committed with impunity during the orgy of violence in 2008 election violence. As human rights defenders we are grievously disappointed by the brutal conduct, unprofessionalism, lack of independence of the security agents and uniformed forces who are supposed to be the custodians of the enforcement of the rule of law and guardians of all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

Politicization of security forces remains a major threat to the existence of peace in the rural communities. Cognizant of the fact that security agents played a pivotal role in the widespread state sponsored gross violation of human rights in the 2008 harmonized elections, ROHR Zimbabwe challenges the coalition government to carry out reforms to ensure the independence of security forces as agreed under article XIII of the Global political Agreement signed by the three principals.

We hold that if elections are held under the presently constituted law enforcement structures widely accused of being partisan, there is a danger of a precedence of March – June 2008 political violence.

ROHR Woking Christmas Party – 4th December 2010

E-mail PDF

The ROHR UK Woking Christmas party had a low turnout, which we assume was due to the very bad weather. Thanks to those who braved the bad weather to ensure we did not miss the opportunity to enjoy our second Christmas party since the branch came into existence. The crowd might have been small but it was a very energetic, fun filled family occasion which was honoured by the presence of the ROHR UK Co-ordinator, Mr Paradzai Mapfumo, who had travelled all the way from Kent and members from Hayes branch.

Chairman’s Remarks

The Chairman, Mr Mudzamiri, warmly welcomed everyone to the event. He went on to remind members on the importance of remembering people back in Zimbabwe during this festive season. He cited the hardships the majority of the people continue to face adding that to millions Christmas had become a non-event as a result of unprecedented levels of poverty. The Chairman berated the Mugabe-led government, Mugabe’s friends and family for lavishing themselves with riches, celebrating Christmas, using money gained from deceit, corruption and obscene salaries. He said this was happening at a time when the people of Zimbabwe, the rightful owners of Zimbabwe’s natural resources would be spending Christmas in exile, away from their families and loved ones, or at work trying to earn just enough to put the next meal on the table.  Yet, he continued, some are in prison while others are in hospitals nursing injuries inflicted by state sponsored thugs for daring to stand up for their human rights. The Chairman said Mugabe’s government can be likened to an ugly baboon that will never win a beauty contest no matter how much lipstick you smear on its lips. He spoke about the ongoing abuses of people's rights in Zimbabwe adding that ROHR Zimbabwe members in the diaspora would continue fighting to expose the brutal regime by naming and shaming and bringing awareness to those within and out of Zimbabwe. He had no kind words either for the inclusive government which he said had failed to bring perpetrators of violence to account or stop the violence that threatens to make Zimbabwe’s next election a mockery of universal principles of justice and democracy. The Chairman ended by wondering how these elections would be any different from previous elelctions if people were already being forced to support Zanu-PF in order to avoid persecution adding that Zimbabweans wherever they are must stand up for the beloved motherland. His remarks were echoed by those gathered who encouraged each other to do their best in the struggle for peace, justice and freedom.

The Chairman thanked Mr Mapfumo, the Hayes branch and the Woking branch for attending the Christmas party and he wish then all the best.

Mr Mapfumo also added by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year as he encouraged all not to forget what we are fighting for as an organisation.

The day’s raffle was drawn by children who also graced the occasion and presentations were made by Saziso Zulu,

The winners were: 1st prize – P Mapfumo, 2nd prize – N Ncube, 3rd prize – C Dedza, 4th prize – C Dedza, 5th prize – M Volkwyn.

The master of ceremony thanked everyone for the hard work they had put in making the ROHR Woking Christmas party a success. Special mention was made of Priscilla Nzala, Nora Masango, C.Mudzamiri, Selina, T Mabodoko, S Hlokana, P Ncube, M & J Volkwyn, Saziso Zulu, C Dedza, Prisca Munhuwegore and Sibongile Sihwa for decorating the hall, donating and cooking the food. There was a toast by the branch vice chairperson Thandi Mabodoko to ROHR Woking. The party ended with the singing of the National anthem and a prayer from Christina Dedza.

On behalf of the ROHR UK executive I would like to wish all our valued members, supporters and all Zimbabweans a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

Paradzai Mapfumo
UK National Coordinator

Season's greetings from Restoration of Human RIghts Zimbabwe (ROHR). We have come to the end of 2010 and we wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful 2011.

Our wish as human rights defenders is that respect for human dignity and human rights should become the basis of governance for the vision of a free, liberated Zimbabwe in which the security of all persons is guaranteed by the state regardless of political affiliation.

We reiterate that human rights are not seasonal / occasional or gifts bestowed upon the people at the pleasure of governments and politicians but rather God given, inalienable and universal.
