MP detained for expressing doubts on Mugabe contesting in the next election

E-mail PDF

Mazowe Central Member of Parliament and MDC national executive member Honorable Shepherd Mushonga was on Saturday 20 March detained for five hours at Bindura central police station on what appears to be tramped up charges. Bindura law and order section quizzed the Member of Parliament for undermining the office of the president during a political rally in February for saying, ‘’Mugabe might not be around come the next election.’’

After being pursued for over a month, Mushonga was arrested and detained for five hours over the weekend by the Bindura Law and Order section only to be released on summons for a court hearing at around 1500 hours. MDC party officials have slammed the repressive, partisan behavior of the police and criticized the harassment of their party members as tantamount to stifling their efforts on constitutional outreach program in the province. The latest arrest brings to 26 the number of MDC leaders and activists arrested on trumped up charges by the police in Mashonaland Central over the past two months.

Inconceivable infringements on the right to freedom of expression by the security forces remains a perilous threat casting a shadow of doom on the envisaged constitutional outreach program in which the majority of Zimbabweans are expected to air their divergent views freely without fear of reprisal or persecution.

Meanwhile 4 MDC activists are on the precipice of an imminent eviction from Foothills farm after magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka passed an eviction order on Friday the 19th of March In Bindura. Linos Zakeyo, Lazarus Malunga, Gift Mhembere and Musona have less than 14 days to appeal to the High court against a controversial order to oust them from their lifetime place of residence now occupied by ZANU Pf party member and liberation war veteran Jacob Chiripanyanga.

The decision against the MDC party activists was passed despite the applicant’s failure to produce a valid offer letter for the piece of land that he has forcibly occupied. Speaking to ROHR Zimbabwe, Linos Zakeyo expressed his uttermost disgruntlement, describing the judgment as unfair and susceptible to external influence on the bench. He further appealed for financial assistance for legal fees to apply for an appeal at the High court to block the eviction order which is bent on eroding his legitimate right to a place to shelter.

E-mail PDF

From ROHR Zimbabwe Information Department - UK

The party was a BLAST!

Thanks to all the people who made it.

Before the report begins, I’d just like to make a special thanks to the following people… that without them, “This Most Awesome Fundraising Party!” would only be a ‘blip blast’, not a ‘WHAM-BAM-BOOM BLAST!’

Special thanks will go to; Rhoda Kuhlengisa and Snodia Chihowa - Event Organisers / Coordinators for working tirelessly to make this event a success. Irene Manhunzi, Melody Mayoyo, Spiwe Dube  and Charity Nyamuzuwe - Food Service Assistants for preventing  the chicken from turning into charcoal and Sadza into bricks by their efficient delivery. Also at the front table saving the food were Diana Mtendereki and Pearl Shambare. Thanks to Charity Nyamuzuwe for help buy the food stuff and prepare and transport the food to Milton Keynes. Colin Chitekwe, thank you so much for all the hard work being the security officer in such events is not easy and acting as the Doorman / Bouncer of the day. Mr. DJ excellent.... kept the fire burning.

Now, back to the report…

Restoration of Human Rights is continues to grow as we make in roads in the hearts and minds of the population of both the host nation and our home nation. However, our greatest challenge remains the establishment of meaningful and sustainable avenues of financing our plethora of campaigns. It is only through collective action from all branches that we may achieve this goal. The Hayes branch has emerged as a leader in both fundraising and the collection and disbursement of goods to some of the disadvantaged people in Zimbabwe.

On Saturday, 27 February the day of the party at Milton Keynes, people started to arrive at 10 o’clock then more and more came as the day lapsed. There was more than 100 people altogether. This well-organized and well-attended event saw most branches represented. The function commenced soon after the meeting for the executive panel and branch chairs. The first part of event opened with a prayer from Martha Jiya (National treasurer) followed by addresses from keynote speakers. The first to give their speech was the Hayes chairperson Snodia Chihowa followed by the guest of honour and President Mr Ephraim Tapa. The final address came from our national chairperson Mr Nedie.

The entertainment programme kicked off immediately after the speeches and the master of ceremony Tich Mutyambizi did not disappoint.  He belted out the tunes catering to all tastes. He had the whole house on their feet with his selection of music. At one point, even Mr Tapa and Mr Nedie who had been glued to their seats could not resist the vibes and were soon competing for space on the dance floor.

The event was a great success and this was as result of the hard work invested by the organizers. For those who were there, you are all my witnesses… Hayes Branch done a good job and they have pioneered the journey. Now the pace is set; I hope other branches with not be found guilty of breaking this chain.

The raffle draw was postponed to the next fundraising event in order to give more people the opportunity to take part.

I have Jemias Mujeyi and Nash Matambanadzo to thank. You saved us all the trouble of cleaning and clearing after the event. You have no idea how significant and grateful this was.

The last guy left when the clock stroke 12 midnight….

You will be sadly missed Sam Mtukudzi

E-mail PDF

From ROHR Zimbabwe Information Department

The entire ROHR Zimbabwe family would like to send deep felt condolences to the Mtukudzi and Chimhare family on the untimely death of their beloved sons in a bizarre car accident. We share the bereavement of the two families as a nation.

As we mourn and celebrate the Sam legacy, we ask God, the Almighty to show his tender mercy and comfort all the bleeding hearts during this somber phase.

The world has been robbed of a disciplined icon, humble role model among the youths and legend in the making. Neither words prose nor verse can begin to describe our shock nor can the minds conceive the unsinkable thought of the sulking vacuum brought about by the unceremonious departure. No one will ever fit in the now cold glorious shoes.

Sam touched and soothed the hearts of many Zimbabweans from all walks of life with his
amazing voice, dance, guitar, saxophone, warm smile and dignifying humility.

Magistrate under threat for ruling against hooligans – Mashonaland Central

E-mail PDF

ROHR Zimbabwe News Alert 13 March 2010

A magistrate who has refused to be named for fear of further victimization has been seriously threatened and put under immense pressure by a top ZANU Pf official who wants to sway the course of justice delivery in favor of five ZANU Pf party supporters.

ROHR Zimbabwe is reliably informed that the magistrate was phoned before delivering a judgment yesterday and threatened by an indignant top wig ZANU Pf, and governor of Mashonaland central, Dinha who ordered him to oblige with an order to award bail to Wellington Chitehwe known as comrade John, Anyway Mavhangira, Jonah Nyakudya, Magaso and another 5th accomplice.

The five were last year charged with theft and causing malicious damage to property when they vandalized the house and stole property belonging to the MDC deputy chairman for Mashonaland central, Tongai Jack during the reign of sponsored terror in last year’s bloody organized election violence of June 2008.

Against the odds, the defiant brave magistrate defied the threats and dismissed the appeal for the application. Conversely, the judgment has inconceivable angered the governor’s scheme to illicitly forge a release for criminals and in the process reward wrong doing and undermining efforts of seeing a just society that respects the rule of law.

Promotion of the culture of impunity eats up the moral fabric and smacks in the face of peace building initiatives aimed at restoring sanity in the country at a time when Zimbabwe is grappling to locate her feet from a painful legacy of violence.

ROHR Zimbabwe will not tire to name and shame all those who are found on the wrong side of the law,  abusing their authority and power to satisfy their personal interest at whim albeit at the cost of the rights of down trodden innocent men, women and children. The culture of impunity cannot core exist with efforts to establish genuine peace and respect for human rights.
