E-mail PDF

It is great news that the people of Wolverhampton finally came together to set up a branch for the Restoration of Human Rights Zimbabwe , a clear sign that Zimbabweans in the U K are totally fed up with the continued human rights abuses in Zimbabwe and are ready for action.

The meeting opened with a prayer from Mr Frank Mamvura followed by welcome remarks from Colleen Maredza, the event co-ordinator. Mr Paradzai Mapfumo, the UK Co-ordinator led the introductions after giving special thanks to the organisers of the event, Colleen Maredza, Joanna Zhira, Agnes Chivhimbo, Pauline Mutema and Senzeni Manyange Mukona. He ended by introducing the guest speakers Messrs Ephraim Tapa , Patrick Gore, Zvibowa and Joseph Nyamande. The speakers echoed one another by highlighting the importance of being conscious to our rights both as human beings and as citizens of Zimbabwe with strong emphasis being put on the need for active participation by Zimbabweans to address the situation.

Mr Nyamande expressed the importance of networking and bringing more people to join the struggle for change in Zimbabwe. Citing Indira Ghandi's famous quote 'YOU ARE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD ', Patrick Gore condemned the majority of Zimbabweans for their unwillingness to actively participate in issues concerning their country and yet they wanted to see a change taking place.

The president and Founder of ROHR Zimbabwe Mr Ephraim Tapa who is himself a victim of politically motivated violence gave a chilling encounter of how he was abducted and tortured for 23 days before he was rescued when the decision to kill him had been given the go-ahead by the regime. He told the gathering that it was his experiences of torture and near death, and the suffering he had witnessed in torture camp that inspired him into founding the organisation. Mr Tapa cited violations of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the African Charter of Human and Peoples Rights and other international law treaties ratified by Zimbabwe saying that the suffering in Zimbabwe was needless and had to be stopped.

An interim committee was elected with the following members: Chairperson- Colleen Maredza, Vice Chair- Abraham Garanewako, Secretary- Pamela Masawi, Organizing Secretary- Charles Masawi, Fundraisers- Nancy Mangwandu and Blessing Mangwandu, Treasurer- Diana Maparadze Veneka, Vice Treasurer- Tendai Sithole, Information and Publicity- Veronica Chakeredza. Activists - Joseph Nyamande, Grace Motsi, Locadia Chigware, Tariro Masawi.

The meeting closed with a prayer after the national anthem.

ROHR Zimbabwe calls for Peace, Freedom and Justice
Jassy Moods was the setting for the launch of the Restoration of Human Rights Zimbabwe Coventry chapterIt is an unusual occurrence to find a wide demographic of between twenty and sixty, male and female in a dimly lit pub in the middle of Coventry, especially if the participants are Zimbabwean. Jassy Moods was the setting for the launch of the Restoration of Human Rights Zimbabwe Coventry chapter. The room was packed and a sense of excitement filled the room as the attendees awaited the address from the various speakers sat in front of them, but it would be folly to imagine that they had come to see or hear anyone else other than Mr Ephraim Tapa the president of the organisation. Among the other speakers were, Mr Patrick Munyemweri, Chair for Ashford branch, Mrs Donna Mugoni, Chair for Northern region and Mr Zibgowa, Chair for the Birmingham branch and Pauline Mutema, Chair Stock-On-Trent.

The august gathering heard about how ROHR was set up to fill a void in the Zimbabwean socio-political climate which is exploitative of the ordinary masses. The organisation has a responsibility to the Zimbabwean people, to educate them on their human rights.

E-mail PDF
ROHR advocates Peace, Justice and FreedomOnly a week after its launch on 25 October 2008, ROHR Wolverhampton is vibrant. Several people are phoning expressing their wish to join the organisation.

On Saturday 1st November, 2008, three members of the Interim Committee; (Colleen Maredza – Chairperson; Mr Joseph Nyamande - activist and myself (Veronica Chakeredza) – Information & Publicity Secretary braved the chilly and wet weather to support the launch of ROHR Manchester.

The exciting journey to and from Manchester by the trio was also an opportunity to bond as committee members as well as to learn from the experiences of other branches.

In Manchester, delegates expressed enthusiasm and commitment to be part in the Restoration of Human Rights – ROHR Zimbabwe.

Mr E Tapa, the Founder and President of ROHR explained in detail the Aims & Objectives of ROHR and called on members to mobilise / recruit other Zimbabweans and sympathisers from other nationalities to join and support ROHR Zimbabwe.

The President cited some disheartening recent incidences of human rights abuse back in Zimbabwe; where people are still being killed; tortured; victimised even when they stage a peaceful demonstration. On Monday 27 October 2008; some members of ROHR who staged a peaceful demo in Harare were abducted, tortured and one Osborn Kachuru was killed by  ZANUPF militia led by a Government Minister.

The President explained that ROHR is a rights –based non-party political organisation which was established to advocate and fight for the restoration of human rights in Zimbabwe as enshrined within the Zimbabwean Constitution, African Charter of Peoples and Human Rights and United Nations Human Rights treaties of which Zimbabwe had ratified. He explained that most rights for Zimbabweans are being violated and that the abuses had to be challenged and resisted. These include;

Right to food
Right to health
Right to education
Right to life and security of person
Right to fair trial and freedom from torture, inhuman or degrading treatment
Right to information; and the freedom of expression, assembly and association
Right to a government of our choice and many more.

ROHR demonstration in LiverpoolThis was the second time ROHR activists demonstrated in the heart of the Capital City of Culture as they once again braved the cold with their little ones. Despite the COLD DRAFT from the Mersey River and the rain, people still stopped to sign our petitions.

All this was being done as they showed their symphathy for their unfortunate families back in Zimbabwe who still face the wrath of the undemocratic governance of Mugabe.

ROHR Demonstration in LiverpoolROHR activists distributed hand outs which herald ROHR stance on human rights violation in Zimbabwe. Those who passed by our stall were shocked by the murder of Osborne Kachuru  ROHR Demonstration in LiverpoolRestoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe (ROHR). Who was beaten to death at ZANU PF's offices in Fourth Street, Harare, after a peaceful demonstration during the SADC talks .  Zanu PF political commissar Eliot Manyika was responsible and ROHR swears to leave no stone unturned to make sure he eventually faces justice.
As we feared the SADC meeting yielded nothing even though Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania are likely to be less cowed by Mugabe.

We are pleased to inform the general public of the immense support we have got from the local authority especially our Mim Whifield who has managed to make this a success. We do hope to get press coverage from the local paper The Daily Post as Liza Williams has shown great interest in covering Human Rights for Asylum Seekers from Zimbabwe.

We have approached  BBC Radio Mersyside and still await to hear from them. As we symphathise with our fellow Congolese brothers and sisters through the hard time they are going through we hope to share the same platform in the High Street in the next coming demonstrations.

Brighton & Hove People's Day

E-mail PDF

Fresh from being launched, the Brighton branch of the Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR) was excited to be invited to take part at the Brighton & Hove People's Day on 5 October 2008 . The branch was launched on 4 October 2008 by the ROHR Zimbabwe President, Mr Ephraim Tapa and his team that included his vice, Mr Stendrick Zvorwadza, and the UK Co-ordinator, Mr Paradzai Mapfumo.

A pat on the back goes to Sinikiwe Dube and her interim team which had already started reaching out to other communities well before the launch.

The theme of the event was “Bringing communities together”.

Participants were drawn from diverse communities across the city with different ethnic and faith communities, sexual orientation and youth organisations. The event ran from noon to 1700hrs.

Once there, we immediately embarked on raising awareness on the situation in Zimbabwe and educating participants on the role of ROHR Zimbabwe. This, we did through leafleting and face to face discussions. We were never short of energy as we were still excited by the successful day of the launch.

Our stand turned out to be very popular with groups including the Black Minority ethnic groups and other organisations.

We were heartened by the fact that the groups were all too willing to offered support. Two of the groups actually offered us platforms to address participants to raise awareness on ROHR Zimbabwe and situation in our country.

We found out that most people had a vague idea of the current Zimbabwe situation and the causes to the problem. Many were disgusted about the brutality of Robert Mugabe and his ZANU PF cronies.

One lady,Mrs Angeline Paukner joined as membership and Hanan Mansi (Black Ethnic Minority Group) gave a £10 donation towards the cause.

Zimbabwe is in a state of decay and it must be saved! It is up to every Zimbabwean citizen and the organisation as a whole to stand up to the challenge to claim our rights, justice and real democracy which the ordinary people have been and are still being denied.
