It is rare for volunteers to work in wet, cold and windy weather conditions, outdoors and on a Saturday morning, let alone one in which pretty much everyone would prefer to be in bed. Dedicated ROHR Chelmsford members once again turned up to offer themselves for community support work in Little Waltham, one of the seventeen sites where the winter bulb planting scheme was taking place on 31st October 2009. Daffodils, tulips and crocuses were some of the plants planted on this day when dozens of volunteers, including local community residents and staff from the Neighbourhood Environmental Action Team, Chelmsford Borough Council, participated in this event. Although the results of all the hard work are not visible yet, by spring there will be a wonderful display of flowers blooming all around the town. Flowers blooming in spring from very little bulbs planted in the autumn has got to be one of the all-time great miracles of nature. If planted well they have the power to deliver a profusion of colour just from some sunlight and water. Thank God miracles still happen. These events have brought togetherness and a better partnership working between ROHR, the local residents and the Council. Mr Adam Webb the Environmental Protection Officer for Chelmsford Borough said, “Voluntary work is available all the time and the dedication you have shown as an organisation so far is greatly appreciated”. Billy Machekano commented that our organisation will continue to help the local community in Chelmsford and will also keep its course, fighting for the restoration of human rights, peace and justice in Zimbabwe”. After hard work of bulb planting at three sites in Little Waltham each covering approximately 30 square meters, Mr Webb thanked all the volunteers for the effort and commitment. ROHR members who participated in this event were Tendai Gwanzura, Christina Zhanji, Billy R Machekano and one who refused to be named. Liverpool Vigil/Demonstration a Success Ladies and gentleman, what started as a very cloudy and wet day turned out to be a nice windy but warm day for the activists who came out for this year’s maiden demonstration in the city of Liverpool. It rained heavily throughout the morning and we almost thought we would not make it to the streets on Saturday afternoon. Around noon the sky started clearing up and within an hour we were out there in our colours unhindered by the possible return of the rain. We gathered on Church Street outside Primark, what a lovely place to be, many thanks to Mim Whitfield of Liverpool city council for giving us such a lovely position. Hundreds of shoppers passed by and it felt good to see them acknowledge our presence. Many of them stopped for a chat and some signed our register. You will be amazed at the interest shown by the people of Liverpool regarding continued Human rights abuses in Zimbabwe. We highlighted to them; the recent withdrawal from full participation in government by Morgan Tsvangirai caused by the failure by Zanu PF to fully implement the terms of the GPA, the continued persecution of members of the opposition as evidenced in the Roy Bennett issue, the selective application of the rule of law ( Zimbabwe Republic Police raid MDC house over the weekend ), the continued invasion of white owned commercial farms, the total disregard of the plight of the farm workers and the stealing of crops worth millions of dollars. There is a resurgence of violence in rural and farming areas (see violence at Foothills farm article on ROHR website). All this cannot be ignored as it may signal what is to come. In these discussions we learnt that we are not alone in dreaming that Zimbabwe will one day be a country that upholds the rule of law, safeguards its citizens’ human rights and returns to be bread basket of Southern Africa. Our gathering ended at 4 pm. We would like thank Mr Mqondisi Tshuma from ROHR Manchester branch and his team that joined us for the day. A special thank you to our Information and publicity Secretary, Mr Humphrey Moyo and Miss Bridget Chimbiro, for the informative and very effective placards; well done guys. And finally thank you to all that made it. Our next demonstration is on the 14th November (2 pm) at the same place. 44 People signed the register. Did you know that ROHR does voluntary work to help the Local UK Community?

Enthusiastic ROHR members from Chelmsford Branch were involved in voluntary community support. This was organised by Chelmsford Borough Council on Saturday 10 October 2009 . ROHR members litter picked along the riverbanks of river Chelmer while Scuba divers and boaters used there various skills to de-clutter the riverbeds removing rubbish and hazardous materials. The litter pick was concentrated on the areas by the side of the rivers that run through the town, starting from Wharf Road Car Park and going up as far as the Bunny Walk covering a 3 mile stretch. This was a fantastic initiative to help with the drive to make Chelmsford Cleaner and Healthier. The Mayor of Chelmsford Borough Council Tony Sach and his delegation later joined the volunteers and pictures were taken for the local press by photographers from the council and the chronicle newspaper. Mr Billy Machekano speaking to Mayor Sach said ,”ROHR Chelmsford branch is part of a diverse community that promotes all programmes and a better lifestyle in our local communities. As much as we stand up for Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe, we also recognise that we belong to a local community that needs our support and our organisation is willing to support programmes that improve our local environment.” One councillor said, “I wish if all other minority organisations think the same way as you do, it will be so good for the community”. Chelmsford Borough Council was very pleased to receive support from many local organisations, including: ROHR Zimbabwe , Chelmsford Sea Cadets, Adventures in Diving, Inland Waterways, Chelmsford Canoe Club, Chelmer Canal Trust, Borough Council staff and members of the public. Jackie Lane the Neighbourhood Environmental Action Team Officer of Chelmsford Borough Council thanked everybody who commited their time and took part in this cleaning programme. A special thank you from Jackie was extended to all the ROHR members who worked tirelessly on this day. The volunteers were: Petronella P. Wadzingenyama, Nyasha Muzambi, Abeliruna Gumbo, Christina Zhanji, Richard Mupunga, Samson Makale, Matha A. Magwaza, Constance Mafigo and Alex Chigumira. The event finished at around 1300hrs. Billy R. Machekano, Information and Publicity OfficerROHR Chelmsford Branch.
