ROHR Zimbabwe has once again mobilised citizens in Gweru to demonstrate against the current political, economic and social impasse besieging the nation of Zimbabwe and to call for a quick resolution of the status quo to one that guarantees democracy, justice, food, health education for all.
At about 1200hrs more than 200 people participated in the protest march held in Gweru today. They were holding placards and distributing flyers to the public. Some passers-by joined in the protests, despite the dangers associated with street demonstrations in Zimbabwe, which have been illegalised by the controversial Public Order and Security Act (POSA), a piece of legislation introduced by the Government to curtail freedom of association and expression.
This demonstration is part of ROHR Zimbabwe's Demand for Democracy campaign, whose agenda is to see Zimbabwe hold free and fair elections is the shortest period possible, thereby giving back the power to the people to choose a Government of their choice.
In the immediate future, the campaign seeks to pressure the negotiating political parties to prioritise a quick redress to the deteriorating economic condition and restoration of basic services such as health and education. The talks have become a joke to ordinary Zimbabweans whose patience is being put to test because they are the ones who are facing the music of a hostile economic climate, spiralling inflation, unavailability of cash due to RBZ's absurd cash withdrawal limits, poor education delivery and a virtually collapsed health sector as most public hospitals are closing down and discharging critical patients.
ROHR Zimbabwe will continue to organise mass protests in all provinces to prepare the ground for a series of national protests until sanity in brought back to Zimbabwe.
